Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging residents to dispose of used vapes responsibly using dedicated vape bins at all Council recycling centres across the City and District.
The new bins provide a safe and convenient way for residents to recycle disposable vapes and used vape devices, helping to reduce environmental harm and protect waste management facilities from potential fire risks.
Every year, thousands of tins of perfectly usable paint are left sitting in garages, sheds and cupboards or are thrown away when they could still make a real difference. Through Community RePaint, delivered by Repair & Share Foyle and supported by Legenderry Colours, we’re giving leftover paint a second life while helping local people, reducing waste and protecting the environment.
Summer is the perfect time to make the most of your brown bin. With gardens in full bloom, more outdoor dining and plenty of seasonal fruit and vegetables, it’s one of the busiest times of year for both food and garden waste.
By recycling your organic waste correctly, you’re helping to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill while supporting a cleaner, greener Derry and Strabane.
What can go in your brown bin?
Your brown bin is for both food waste and garden waste.
Food waste should be placed in a compostable liner before going into the brown bin. If you don’t have a compostable liner, place some kitchen roll in your caddy. Garden waste should be placed in the bin loosely.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging residents, businesses and community groups to get involved in Plastic Free July, the global movement that inspires millions of people to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics and make more sustainable choices every day.
Throughout July, you can take simple but meaningful steps to cut plastic waste, helping to protect the local environment, reduce pollution and support a cleaner, greener future for all.
Plastic pollution continues to pose significant challenges for wildlife, waterways and communities. By making small changes such as carrying a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, shopping bag or lunch container, residents can make a positive impact that adds up over time.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is delighted to support International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) 2026, taking place from 3rd to 9th May 2026.
International Compost Awareness Week is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative within the composting industry. This year’s theme, “Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us”, aims to raise public awareness of the many benefits of compost use, from improving and maintaining high-quality soil and supporting healthy plant growth, to reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, improving water quality, and protecting the wider environment.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging local families to check out the many benefits of changing from disposable nappies during Reusable Nappy Week, taking place April 27th to May 4th.
Reusable Nappy Week includes a diverse programme of awareness-raising activities and advocacy focused on helping families learn more about sustainable nappy choices. Throughout the week, parents and carers can discover the many advantages of reusable nappies, including how to get started, where to purchase them, and how to take part in local and international events.
Bin collections will take place as scheduled on Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), and Tuesday (7 April).
Recycling Centres will be closed on Easter Sunday (5 April) and Easter Monday (6 April), reopening as normal on Tuesday 7 April.
In line with the clocks going forward this weekend, Recycling Centres will also change to their summer opening times from Monday 30th March. Several sites will benefit from extended weekday evening hours, while others will introduce revised Monday openings.
