By recycling your organic waste correctly, you’re helping to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill while supporting a cleaner, greener Derry and Strabane.
What can go in your brown bin?
Your brown bin is for both food waste and garden waste.
Food waste should be placed in a compostable liner before going into the brown bin. If you don’t have a compostable liner, place some kitchen roll in your caddy. Garden waste should be placed in the bin loosely.

International Compost Awareness Week is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative within the composting industry. This year’s theme, “Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us”, aims to raise public awareness of the many benefits of compost use, from improving and maintaining high-quality soil and supporting healthy plant growth, to reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, improving water quality, and protecting the wider environment.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging local families to check out the many benefits of changing from disposable nappies during Reusable Nappy Week, taking place April 27th to May 4th.
Reusable Nappy Week includes a diverse programme of awareness-raising activities and advocacy focused on helping families learn more about sustainable nappy choices. Throughout the week, parents and carers can discover the many advantages of reusable nappies, including how to get started, where to purchase them, and how to take part in local and international events.
Bin collections will take place as scheduled on Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), and Tuesday (7 April).
Recycling Centres will be closed on Easter Sunday (5 April) and Easter Monday (6 April), reopening as normal on Tuesday 7 April.
In line with the clocks going forward this weekend, Recycling Centres will also change to their summer opening times from Monday 30th March. Several sites will benefit from extended weekday evening hours, while others will introduce revised Monday openings.
